Australian Museum

The Australian Museum has an international reputation in the fields of natural history and indigenous studies research, community programs and exhibitions. It has been collecting natural science specimens and cultural artefacts since 1827 and holds over 14 million items in its collection.

The collections have scientific and cultural content that make them one of the nation’s most important animal, mineral, fossil and anthropological collections. Through these collections, its research, its community programs, website and exhibitions the Australian Museum’s inspires the exploration of nature and cultures.

The Australian Museum holds an ethnographic collection of over 110,000 artefacts with a focus on Indigenous Australia, the Pacific region and island South-east Asia, and holds around one million items in its Aboriginal Archaeology collections.

The Museum promotes the involvement of Indigenous peoples whose cultural heritage is represented in the collections and encourages close relationships with Indigenous peoples within and beyond Australia. We collaborate widely with other museums and scientists across the world to develop advanced collection management practices, innovative research projects and unique public programs.
